Siddha Dharma · The sacred seals

Ishanak Rudra Ganak (Seals)

Ganak is the mark of the gaṇa pramukh, the chief of the gaṇa: gaṇ for the chief and k for the mark (chihna).

Twenty-one Ganak (seals), each described as it appears: the figures, the animals and plants around them, and the signs carved along their edges, with the Boon Kala Ganak Mana for each.

Horisha Deu (Dev), Ganak 1, terracotta Ganak (seal) in raised relief

Ganak 1

Horisha Deu (Dev)

This figure stands with both arms straight out to the sides, bangled from wrist to elbow. Each hand has a leopard by the neck. The leopards are up on their hind legs, mouths open in a snarl, forepaws curled, spotted with a few stripes along the flanks, and their tails hang long behind them. The figure is slender, with small breasts. The hair is in a tiered bun, the ears carry hoops, a line is marked on the chin, and a pendant of beads hangs from the necklace. A pleated skirt reaches the knee with a flap hanging at the front, there are rings at the ankles, and the feet are in close-fitting shoes. The bottom band is plain. Along the top, left to right, run three strokes, an eight-spoked chakra of Jaa Boonak, a looped ribbon sign, an open triangle, another looped sign and three strokes again.

Ganak 2

Dumisha Deu (Dev)

An elephant stands on one side of this Ganak (seal) and a humped bull on the other. Between them a Deu sits above a dhuna. His horns are very large, ridged across their width and curving up and inward from a ribbed cap with a headband. His ribs are drawn across his chest and belly, and his hands rest on his knees. Right below him is the dhuna, about seven flames rising from a platform of two steps. The elephant faces him with a big ear marked in vertical lines, a short tusk and a ridged trunk curled at the tip, and the bull faces him too, horns upturned, a deep folded dewlap under its neck. The top row has a stack of three upward chevrons at each end, then a crescent moon (chandra) with its horns up, and in the middle two square signs side by side, the four boxes of Kho Boonak with a dot in each and a cross with a spiral curled in each corner.

Osisha Deu (Dev), Ganak 3, terracotta Ganak (seal) in raised relief

Ganak 3

Osisha Deu (Dev)

Above this figure's head a zigzag line rises into three peaks. The figure is slim and stands with feet apart. The ribs show, the hair is in a topknot, and a band across the forehead carries a tilak. There is a stroke on the chin. The lower garment is wrapped and knotted at the waist, with a long end hanging down between the legs. Both arms reach out. Each hand is at the throat of a leopard. The leopards stand on their hind legs facing the figure, jaws open, forepaws raised, and their spotted tails curve up behind them in an S. The row of signs along the top begins and ends with a pointed leaf drawn with its veins, and between them come a reversed svastika of Po Boonak, a small tree with its branches turned up, a spiral and three strokes.

Ishatisha Debbi (Devi), Ganak 4, terracotta Ganak (seal) in raised relief

Ganak 4

Ishatisha Debbi (Devi)

A pipal tree grows over this gaṇikā. She stands facing us with a narrow waist and wide hips, bare-breasted, her hair in a knot, and she has raised both arms to hold its branches. Behind her head the branches meet in a pointed arch, framing her, and from there they curl away to both sides of the Ganak (seal) carrying about thirteen leaves, each one heart-shaped and drawn with its veins. Her navel is marked. She wears a brief garment at the hips with a V-shaped band, round earrings, a necklace and stacked bangles, and her bare feet are turned out on a ground line. Below the branches two stags stand and face her. Their antlers branch, and their bodies are covered in dots with stripes down the flanks, one the mirror of the other. The signs at the top are a ring in the centre, then on each side a looped sign like a tied ribbon, a cup crossed by two bars, and a trikoṇa with a bindu inside at the end.

Raisha Deu (Dev), Ganak 5, terracotta Ganak (seal) in raised relief

Ganak 5

Raisha Deu (Dev)

A bearded gaṇa sits at the centre. His knees are out and the soles of his feet pressed together, his hands rest on his knees, his eyes are closed and his hair is wound high on his head. Two Nāga Devta rise on either side of him. Each one has its hood spread and striped and its tongue flicking toward his face, and its long dotted body makes one full loop at about the height of his knees before running down to the corner. Near each edge stands a plant with three pairs of pointed leaves. Along the bottom two animals face each other: a crested peacock with a spotted body on one side, and on the other a mongoose with a pointed snout and a long tail. Seven signs run across the top, mirrored from the middle: the four boxes of Kho Boonak with a dot in each, then a spiral on each side, three vertical strokes, and a reversed svastika of Po Boonak at each end.

Ganak 6

Enkisha Deu (Dev)

Here a Deu sits on a low seat with his knees spread wide and his heels drawn together beneath him. On his head is a tall ribbed cap with two great horns curving out of it. His eyes are closed, and he has a long pointed beard, hoops in his ears and bangles stacked up his arms, but his hands are not resting. Each has taken hold of an animal. On his right sits a tiger, striped and snarling, its long tail curling round along the bottom of the Ganak (seal), and he holds it by the jaw. On his left sits a stranger creature, spotted all over like a leopard, with upright ears and a single horn rising from its nose, and he holds it by the throat. Under the seat, between its legs, are two short strokes with a small square dot between them, a small leafy sprig, and two more strokes with a dot between them. The signs along the top mirror each other from the centre outward: a reversed svastika in the middle, then strokes, then a trikoṇa with a bindu inside, and an eight-spoked chakra of Jaa Boonak at each end.

Panisha Deu (Dev), Ganak 7, terracotta Ganak (seal) in raised relief

Ganak 7

Panisha Deu (Dev)

The middle of this Ganak (seal) is taken up by a dhuna. It is a solid block on a broad base, with a flat slab on top and a sunken panel in its face, and nine or so flames rise off it. Behind the fire a Deu shows from the waist up. He lifts both arms and bends them at the elbows, with the palms open and turned up to either side. His hair is in a knot above a headband, and he wears hoop earrings, a layered necklace and banded armlets. His lower garment has vertical pleats, with a small V marked at the waist. A bull comes up on its hind legs from each side toward the dhuna, forelegs raised and bent, one long horn sweeping upward. The two are mirror images. The signs along the top mirror from the centre as well: a plain ring in the middle, then on each side a ḍamaru, a triśūla on a long stem, and at the ends the four boxes of Kho Boonak with a dot in each.

Flisha Deu-Debbi (Dev-Devi), Ganak 8, terracotta Ganak (seal) in raised relief

Ganak 8

Flisha Deu-Debbi (Dev-Devi)

Look first at the Deu/Debbi in the middle, because everything on this Ganak (seal) is arranged around this one figure. The figure stands straight and faces us, bare to the waist, in a short skirt folded in tiers, with heavy rings in the ears, bangles up the arms and the hair drawn into a knot. Out of that knot two leafy branches spread to either side, almost like antlers. The arms are open wide and both hands are busy. One holds a tiger by the throat, a big striped animal up on its hind legs with its mouth open. The other holds a spotted stag with branching antlers, which has reared up too and turned its head toward the figure. Lower down, the Ganak fills with smaller life: a peacock trailing its spotted tail on one side, a little ram with a curled horn on the other, and between the bare feet a single sprig with its leaves in pairs. Across the top run seven signs. They read the same from both ends: a forked sign, a ring circled with dots, three bars, and at the centre a double loop with a dot above it. Flisha is worshipped in both forms, as Debbi (Devi) and as Deu (Devta), and both the female and the male form belong to this one being. It may be the earliest origin of Ardhanarishvara.

Apisha Deu (Dev), Ganak 9, terracotta Ganak (seal) in raised relief

Ganak 9

Apisha Deu (Dev)

A single figure stands at the left edge of this Ganak (seal), seen from the side, facing a great bull with both hands raised in front of the chest and the palms open toward it. The hair is drawn up in a knot with long locks falling behind. There is a hoop at the ear, a necklace, bangles at the wrists and above the elbow, and a long wrapped garment that falls in diagonal folds to the ankles. The feet are bare. The bull fills most of the Ganak. It stands facing the figure, its huge ridged horns curving up into a crescent, its neck and dewlap marked with deep folds, its long tail hanging to a tuft near the ground. A spotted snake winds around it. Its head rises at the upper right with the forked tongue out toward the bull, its body drops behind the bull's back, and lower down it comes round in a loop in front of the forelegs and runs along the ground between the legs. Everything stands on one ground line. The seven signs along the top do not mirror. From left to right they are an open diamond, a forked sign with a crossbar on its stem, three strokes hanging from a bar, a looped ribbon sign over a small triangle, a triśūla on a stem crossed by a bar, three vertical strokes, and a ring with a bindu at its centre.

Mithisha Deu (Dev), Ganak 10, terracotta Ganak (seal) in raised relief

Ganak 10

Mithisha Deu (Dev)

Two wild goats have reared up on their hind legs on either side of a seated gaṇa, forelegs raised and bent toward him, their big ridged horns sweeping back in half circles. His palms are pressed together in front of his chest. He is seated with legs crossed on a flat slab, over a pedestal cut with vertical grooves. He has a long beard and moustache, and his hair is coiled high above a headband. Hoops hang from his ears, bangles circle his arms above the elbows and at the wrists, and a pleated cloth is tied at the waist. The goats are drawn as mirror images, down to their cloven hooves and hanging tails. Across the top, from the centre out, come a plain diamond, a ring on each side, a looped ribbon sign over a small triangle, and at each end three strokes joined at the base.

Nubisha Deu (Dev), Ganak 11, terracotta Ganak (seal) in raised relief

Ganak 11

Nubisha Deu (Dev)

This figure has one head and two faces, each in profile, looking away from each other in opposite directions, and above them sits a tall tiered headdress shaped like a cone with a knob on top. The arms reach out. Each hand rests on the raised muzzle of a dog, or perhaps a jackal. The two animals sit on their haunches on low ledges with their heads tilted up, ears pointed, each with a collar of three bands, stripes along the ribs and a long curled tail. The figure is bare-breasted, with a layered necklace, the navel marked, bands on the upper arms, a skirt with a jagged hem and thick rings at the ankles. A small three-leaved sprout grows between the feet with three strokes on each side. Seven signs run across the top: three strokes hanging from a bar, a diamond within a diamond, a triśūla, the four boxes of Kho Boonak with dots, a second triśūla and diamond, and three strokes standing on a bar.

Ganak 12

Melisha Deu (Dev)

Two peacocks stand on either side of this seated figure, facing in, each with a crest of three knobs on thin stems, a long neck, a striped folded wing and a tail full of eyespots that falls all the way to the corner. The figure is seated on a bench over a long stepped platform, legs crossed, hands on the knees. Two horns rise from the head, curving up and out and then turning back in at the tips, with a coil of hair between them. There is a third eye on the forehead and a small upright mark on the chin. A single line runs down the centre of the body. The lower garment ends in a fringe of tapered tabs. This Ganak (seal) has signs at the bottom as well as the top. Below, in the centre, a bowl stands on a triangular foot with a fan of rays or flames rising out of it, with three strokes on each side and then, at the ends, a svastika of Ko Boonak and a reversed svastika of Po Boonak. Above, the row runs from a triśūla at each end through a rayed sūrya and a diamond with a dot to four strokes at the centre.

Ganak 13

Motisha Deu (Dev)

Two owls keep watch on either side of this seated Deu, seen from the front with great round eyes drawn as rings inside rings, ear tufts, spotted bodies, striped wings and long pointed tails. He sits on a slab over a stepped base. His hands rest palm down beside his knees. His headdress is tall and tiered, and long strands of hair fall to his shoulders. He wears hoop earrings, a layered necklace, stacks of bangles on his forearms and rings at his ankles. On each side of his head floats a cluster of five dots arranged in a cross. The knob on top of his headdress sits just beneath the central sign of the top row, three bars stacked over a crescent shaped like a bowl. Out from that come a ring with a bindu, a svastika and a triśūla on each side, the svastika of Ko Boonak on one side and the reversed svastika of Po Boonak on the other. A raised border closes off a second row along the bottom: two svastika of Ko Boonak, three strokes, a ḍamaru, three strokes, and two reversed svastika of Po Boonak.

Ganak 14

Sobisha Deu (Dev)

The standing figure on this Ganak (seal) has a human body and the head of a bull. Big ridged horns curve out and up from the head, the ears stand out to the sides, and there is a round mark in the middle of the forehead. Below the neck the body is that of a gaṇikā, bare-breasted, with a necklace, a dot at the navel, bangles, a skirt with a jagged hem and rings at the ankles. Both arms are raised, and each hand holds a short handle topped with a spray of three leaves. It stands on a block filled with wavy lines. On either side a crocodile rears up on its curled tail, jaws wide open and full of teeth. Its body is spotted and its back is edged with a serrated ridge. Next to each grows a small three-leaved plant on a thin stem. Along the top, a crescent moon (chandra) with its horns up rests on a bar in the centre, with a diamond inside a diamond on each side and, at the ends, a triśūla standing on a cross.

The figure at the centre of this Ganak (seal) has three faces, one looking straight at us and one turned to each side in profile, all under a tall headdress of stacked rings topped with a knob. The arms are lowered to the seat. The ribs are marked, bangles are stacked on the upper arms and forearms, and there are hoops in the ears and a layered necklace. The bench has a round knob at each end and legs that finish in L-shaped feet. Two dotted snakes rise in tall S-curves up the sides, heads turned in and tongues out. Under the bench a three-leaved sprout grows in the middle, and on each side of it sit two short strokes, a small cluster of dots and three bars. The top row has a triangle pointing down at one end and one pointing up at the other, then a triśūla with curved outer points and a straight triśūla, the four boxes of Kho Boonak twice, and an eight-spoked chakra of Jaa Boonak in the centre.

Sūrya on one side, chandra on the other, and a Debbi standing between them with a leafy branch in each hand. The sun sits low on the left, a round disc with about thirty straight rays, and the moon lies low on the right as a large crescent with its horns turned up. The Debbi faces us. Her hair is piled into a tall bun with bands. She is bare-breasted, with earrings, a necklace and the lines of her body marked, and her forearms are covered in bangles. Her arms are held out, and in each hand stands a branch ending in three leaves. Her pleated skirt has a V-shaped waistband, and she stands barefoot on a ground line. The top row here does not mirror. From left to right it has a svastika of Ko Boonak, two looped ribbon signs, a reversed svastika of Po Boonak, a ring with a hole, and three bars.

Girisha Deu (Dev)

This Deu faces us with his body, but his head turns to the side in profile. We see one large eye, a hoop at the ear and long hair falling down his back from a band across his forehead. Both arms are lifted with the elbows bent and the hands open, palms out and fingers spread. Heavy stacks of bangles circle his wrists and upper arms, and more stacks circle his ankles. His pleated skirt reaches the knee. At each shoulder a spiral turns inside a ring of about twenty dots, and under each spiral rises a large triangle like a mountain with a second, smaller peak set inside it. Along the bottom runs a band of short strokes in threes and a row of small dots, with a tiny sprout of three shoots coming up between his feet. The top row is long, twelve signs, mirrored about two rings in the centre: three bars, a stroke, nine dots in a diamond, another stroke, and an upright zigzag at each end.

Water lies on both sides of this seated gaṇikā, three wavy lines under one straight one. Above the water, on each side, a bird spreads itself wide. The birds face us with wings open and tails fanned out below, their bodies covered in dots. Her bench is made of a slab, posts and a rail, set on a long stepped base. She wears a tall tiered headdress, earrings and a necklace. Thick stacks of bangles cover her forearms. Her hands rest on her knees. In each lower corner a small plant sprouts two curled leaves from a post joined to the base. At the top centre is a ring surrounded by short rays. Moving outward from it on each side are the four boxes of Kho Boonak with a dot in each, two strokes with three dots between them, and at the end a small triangle on a post with a dot on either side, and a long line runs under the row.

Water fills the lower part of this Ganak (seal) in five long wavy lines, and out of it grows a single lotus on a straight stem. The figure sits on the open flower. In each hand is a lotus bud on a short stem. Like the figure on Nubisha, this one has one head and two faces looking away from each other, with a single earring hanging where the faces meet and a tall headdress of stacked rings. The figure is bare-breasted, with a necklace, armlets and bangles. On each side a large fish rises out of the water toward the top of the Ganak, head up and turned inward, its body spotted, its fins marked with lines and its tail patterned like a herringbone. A ring with a hole rests right on top of the headdress. The other signs in the top row are the four boxes of Kho Boonak with dots on each side, and at each end a stroke with three short bars and a slanted line at the top, the right one a mirror of the left.

This gaṇikā stands in a wide stance, knees bent outward and feet turned out. In each hand she grips a snake just behind its head. The snakes hang the whole length of her body, spotted from end to end, their heads turned outward with mouths open. Her hair is coiled into a bun. She has rings in her ears, a mark on the chin, a layered necklace and heavy bangles, a skirt covered in dots with a zigzag hem, and stacked rings at her ankles. Three identical discs surround her, one on each side at shoulder height and one between her feet. Each disc has a ring and dot at the centre, a circle of small holes and eight short rounded spokes around the rim. Under each side disc lie three bars, and in each lower corner stands a diamond with little curled loops at its points and a dot in the middle, raised on three stepped bars. Along the top a reversed svastika of Po Boonak sits in the centre, with three strokes on a base on each side, then a sign made of a dot over an arc over a stem over an arc over a dot, and at each end a trikoṇa with a bindu, pointing in toward the middle.

Chakrisha Deu (Dev), Ganak 21, terracotta Ganak (seal) in raised relief

Ganak 21

Chakrisha Deu (Dev)

This is the only round Ganak (seal) of the set, and a border runs all the way around its edge between two circles. The border is one small sign repeated close together: a small triśūla, its three points rising from a cup-shaped base on a short stem that points in toward the centre. Inside the border there is no figure at all. The middle is a square frame of four bars with a small ring at each corner, and inside the square sits an eight-petalled lotus (aṣṭadala padma). Each pointed petal is marked down its middle, and they open around a centre of rings within rings and a bindu. A crested bird stands on the top bar of the square with its tail feathers hanging down over the frame. On either side of the bird is a svastika with a dot in each of its four corners: the svastika of Ko Boonak on one side and the reversed svastika of Po Boonak on the other. On the left a wild goat stands facing the square, its long ridged horns sweeping back and its neck and chest marked with stripes, and under its belly is a trikoṇa with a bindu inside. On the right a fish hangs upright, head up, its body covered in a crosshatch of scales, with a stack of horizontal bars above it. Along the bottom a snake lies in a long curve, its body banded and dotted, its head raised and its forked tongue out. In the lower left corner are the four boxes of Kho Boonak with a dot in each, and in the lower right an eight-spoked chakra. This is the chakra of Jaa Boonak. Whether a Jaa Boonak chakra has eight spokes, as on these Ganak, or six, as at older places, both belong to Jaa Boonak.
